Why I Became a Career Coach
After many rounds of struggling with on-campus interviews – either not having an answer to a question or tripping over my words when I did have a response - I met with the undergraduate career center’s director for guidance. He helped me rework my resume to articulate my brand better, and we held mock interviews to help me find phrases to convey my skills and strengths verbally. I gained confidence in my unique strengths and how I presented myself during interviews by obtaining insight into the meaning behind specific interview questions and practicing (and practicing, practicing, and more practicing…).
I have never forgotten the difference working with the career center’s director made in my life. I’ve carried the lessons learned and the confidence and ability to understand and articulate my strengths throughout my professional career. Serving as a career coach is a way to give back by supporting students through mid-career professionals in building their career communication skills.
At the encouragement of a family member to “hang my shingle,” I started KB Expressions Coaching (formerly known as KB Expressions). The original vision focused on helping individuals build self-confidence and communicate their strengths in a career/job context. Since starting KB Expressions Coaching over 15 years ago, I've recognized that sharing my lightbulb moment - there is power in getting to know oneself - and expanding on the original vision of how to help others succeed through the inclusion of assessment tools to help clients gain personal insight.
I earned an MBA in Management and MA in Corporate & Organization Communications degrees in 2004. What started as a way to understand my response to change, my master’s thesis, “The Human Element During Organizational Change,” also helped others through a real-time study of a department reorganization.
Since opening KB Expressions Coaching, I have earned multiple professional designations through the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches (PARWCC), including Certificated Professional Career Coach (CPCC), Certified Interview Coach (CIC), Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW), and Certified Digital Career Specialist (CDCS) which built my knowledge of how to help others leverage LinkedIn for personal branding, networking, and job searchings. Most recently, I earned the Certified Student Career Coach (CSCC) designation that focused on supporting students in their educational and career journeys.
I am currently completing the requirements to be eligible to sit for the International Coaching Federation (ICF) Associate Certified Coach (ACC) designation.
